20 Years After ‘It’s Perfectly Normal,’ What’s Changed?

“It’s Perfectly Normal,” the go-to guide for teenagers and adults on adolescent sexual health and development, was first published 20 years ago, in 1994. Fifteen years ago, the author Robie H. Harris and the illustrator Michael Emberly followed it with “It’s So Amazing,” subtitled “A Book About Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies and Families” (what else could you even need to know?).
Between “It’s Perfectly Normal,” “It’s So Amazing” and their book for younger children, “It’s Not the Stork,” Ms. Harris and her colleague have been talking sex and kids for years — all to help parents and professionals talk about sex with kids, and to give children and teenagers an honest, accurate resource for the questions they don’t ask. Both “It’s Perfectly Normal” and “It’s So Amazing” are out in new, updated editions this fall. I asked Ms. Harris to tell me what’s changed in the books — and in her conversations with children, teenagers and parents — over the years.
Some things about sex, birth and everything before, after and in between will always stay the same (think masturbation and menstruation), but in some areas, the past two decades have meant real change. “It’s Perfectly Normal” has a new explanation of surrogacy and a much-expanded section on our online world, with discussions of sexting and online bullying. “It’s So Amazing” has an expanded section on Internet safety as well.
“The major change I’ve seen has to do with how kids get their information,” Ms. Harris said. “Kids understand both the benefits of finding really great information on the Internet and the fact that you can have misinformation. We encourage them to check with a trusted adult — someone in your life who can give you accurate information or steer you to it.”
“It’s Perfectly Normal” also expands its discussion of sexual identity beyond homosexual and heterosexual to include, and define, the now-common acronym L.G.B.T. (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender), and it slightly expands a chapter on sexual abuse to add a discussion of the word “harass.” In both cases, it’s not that things have changed, but that we’ve changed in the way we talk about it. “That’s the language that makes sense,” Ms. Harris said. “That’s what they hear. Kids need to have the information they need to understand what’s going on and treat everyone respectfully.”

I’ve long loved “It’s So Amazing” for making that sometimes difficult but inevitable question of childhood “Where do babies come from?” just another matter-of-fact inquiry. The answer may feel emotional, complex and awkward to an adult, but to a child, it can just be fascinating. The glorious, life-sized image of the fetus in the womb, and all the smaller images leading up to it, answer so many questions. It’s a book my children have passed around and pored over for years (now enjoying a renewed popularity because of a pregnant friend). Even beyond the information, I appreciate the diversity of the illustrations. All kinds of people, in every size and shape imaginable, appear in the most ordinary ways.
“It’s Perfectly Normal” applies the same fact-based tone to sexuality that’s gone from the abstract (that’s what’s happening) to the personal (that’s what’s happening inside me). It too is wonderful, although fewer parents will find themselves reading it side by side with curious children. Reading it as an adult can make it easier to take that same factual tone and approach with our teenagers and preteenagers, who need us to broach some hard subjects, whether it’s sexual abuse or what to do with unexpectedly dirty sheets.
“It’s hard to do for a lot of parents,” Ms. Harris said. “Some of the information is complicated. You’re talking to your own kids about sexuality. But take a deep breath and go in, and if you didn’t start when your child was 3, that’s O.K. When you’re talking about sexuality, the things that are healthy and normal or the things we know are not healthy and normal, like H.I.V. or early pregnancy, it’s a wonderful time to talk about your own values. Someone may disagree with what I wrote. They can say, ‘This is what our family believes. This is what this author wrote. This is what your friends may believe.’ They can start the conversation.”

If that’s a conversation you’re looking to start, these books, with their science-based, rigorously researched approach, make for solid footing on which to begin. “You can say, ‘I read this book. I thought it was interesting. I didn’t know that the egg was the largest cell in the human body,’ or something like that,” Ms. Harris suggests. “Some kids will say ‘I know all that’. Others will take the book. Some will pretend not to be interested. Parents tell me they just leave it somewhere and then suddenly it’s gone. Just let your kids know they can come and talk to you about it. Some will, some won’t.”
And, of course, either way is perfectly normal.

He’s Only 4 Years Old. But His Extra-Ordinary Mathematics Skills Will Absolutely Impress You!

Most of us aspire to reach excellence in our fields. Some of us reach the peak of our careers during adulthood, but some are so talented and skilled during childhood that they are comparable or even superior to adults. Just like this 4 year old boy with impressive mathematics skills.
(Watch the video below…)

Miguel Secillano III or simply Miko, is a typical 4-year old boy.

miko-secillano-1
According to his father, Mr. Philip John Secillano from Bicol Philippines now living in Florida, Miko loves to play. He is sweet, thoughtful, naughty, playful and sometimes stubborn just like any other 4 year old boy.

He started to read when he was 2 years old.

miko-secillano-2

At 3 years old he got interested with maps.

miko-secillano-3
You can just give him a blank map and he can name which country is which. he also knows its capitals and 227 world flags.

Mr. Secillano introduced Math to Miko when he was 2 years old and it wasn’t that easy.

miko-secillano-4
I introduced Math when he was 2 but he would always budge though he knew how to count 1-100 by then but he just don’t want everytime I ask him arithmetic so we did not bother to teach because its not worth forcing a kid to learn if they don’t like.

But when he turned 4, Miko showed interest in numbers. So Mr. Secillano taught him arithmetic and more!

miko-secillano-5
When he turned 4, he’s more interested with numbers, so as soon we noticed that, I taught him arithmetic and it goes on to fractions, factoring numbers, exponents, geometry and some pre algebra.

While most teenagers fret about their exams, Miko sailed through his maths problems with ease.

What Came First, The Chicken Or The Egg? The Real Answer According to Science.

You knew the question “Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Was hard, but maybe you didn’t realize it was so complex. But in three and a half fast-talking minutes Mitchell Moffit and Gregory Brown from AASP Science use the multiple answers to this nearly 2000-year-old question to teach a little about evolution.
You can sort of see why Creationism survives – you don’t have to do all this hard thinking, instead just deciding that whichever God happened to make was first. However, Richard Dawkins also takes a simple approach, saying, “The egg of course. The chicken is only an egg’s way of making another egg.”

If I’d Learned One Thing In College, I Wish It Had Been This

I know it makes me sound like and old man — something I may or may not be — but I often try to convey to young people that to get paid to do what you love is one of the most magical things you can find. I’ve been fortunate enough to have had that for most of my adult working life in various forms.
Find that. Or, if you’re at the tail end of work life, encourage others to do so. It’s one of the secrets to happiness.

Success Tips: How to Buy a Car and House in 5 Years

Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-Shing shares some of his money wisdom, outlining an inspirational five-year plan to improve one’s lot in life. Mr. Li is the richest man in Asia with a net worth of $28.8 billion. From high school dropout to self-made billionaire, Li came from very humble beginnings when he was growing up in China. He wrote an article a while back outlining a plan that anyone can follow to be able to buy a car and a house within five years; something like The Art of War for how entrepreneurs and success seekers should act. That article was recently translated to English by Edmund Ng of CeoConnectz. Check out and study these eight points from Li Ka-Shing to master the art of success.
LiKaShingHeader

1. Always have Cheap but Healthy Diet.

The first set of funds is used for living expenses. It’s a simple way of living and you can only be assigned to less than twenty dollars a day. A daily breakfast of vermicelli, an egg and a cup of milk. For lunch just have a simple set lunch, a snack and a fruit. For dinner go to your kitchen and cook your own meals that consist of two vegetables dishes and a glass of milk before bedtime. When you are young, the body will not have too many problems for a few years with this way of living.

2. Buy lunch for people more important than you.

Second set of funds: To make friends, expand your interpersonal circle. This will make you well off. Your phone bills can be budgeted. You can buy your friends 2 lunches a month. Who should you buy lunch for? Always remember to buy lunch for people who are more knowledgeable than you, richer than you or people who have helped you in your career. Make sure you do that every month. After one year, your circle of friends should have generated tremendous value for you. Your reputation, influence, and added value will be clearly recognized. You’ll also enhance your image of being kind and generous.

3. Become a bookworm.

Third set of funds: To learn. Monthly spend about RMB 50 to RMB 100 to buy books. Because you don’t have a lot of money, you should pay attention to learning. When you buy the books, read them carefully and learn the lessons and strategies that are being taught in the book. For each book, after you read them, put them into your own language to tell the stories. Sharing with others can improve your credibility and enhance the affinity.

4. Grow Yourself by Traveling.

Fourth set of funds: Use it for holidays overseas. Reward yourself by traveling at least once a year. Continue to grow from the experience of life. Stay in youth hostels to save cost. In a few years you would have traveled to many countries and have different experiences. Use that experience to recharge yourself so that you’ll continually have passion in your work.

5. Save and invest.

Fifth set of funds: Invest. Save the $500 in your bank and grow it as your initial startup capital. The capital can then be used to do a small business. Small business is safe. Go to wholesalers and look for products to sell. Even if you lose money, you will not lose too much money. However, when you start earning money, it will boost your confidence and courage and have a whole new learning experience of running a small business. Earn more and you can then begin to buy long-term investment plans and get long-term security on your financial wealth being of yourself and your families. So that no matter what happens, there will be adequate funds and the quality of life will not decline.

6. Learn to sell like a wolf.

It would be great to find a part-time sales job. Doing sales is challenging but it’s the fastest way for you to acquire the art of selling and this is a very deep skill that you will be able to use for the rest of your career. All successful entrepreneurs are good salespeople. They have the ability to sell their dream and visions. You’ll also meet many people that will be of value to you in the later part of your career. Once you’re in sales, you will also learn what sells and what doesn’t. Use the sensitivity of detecting market sentiments as a platform for running your business and in the identification of product winners in the future.

7. Don’t wear clothes you can barely afford.

Try to buy minimal clothes and shoes. You can buy them all you want when you’re rich. Save your money and instead buy gifts for your loved ones and tell them your plans and your financial goals. Tell them why you are so thrifty. Tell them your efforts, direction and your dreams.

8. Learn from others by offering to help them.

Businessmen everywhere need help. Offer yourself to do part-time work for any kind of opportunity. This will help to hone your will and improve your skills. You will start to develop eloquence and soon, you’ll be closer to your financial goals.

9. Start planning A.S.A.P.

Life can be designed. Careers can be planned. Happiness can be prepared. You should start planning now. When you are poor, spend less time at home and more time outside. When you are rich, stay at home more and less outside. This is the art of living. When you are poor, spend money on others. When you’re rich, spend money on yourself. Many people are doing the opposite.

10. Don’t let your ego rule you.

When you are poor, be good to others. Don’t be calculative. When you are rich, you must learn to let others be good to you. You have to learn to be good to yourself even more. When you are poor, you have to throw yourself out in the open and let people make good use of you. When you are rich, you have to conserve yourself well and not let people easily make use of you. These are the intricate ways of life that many people don’t understand.

11. Don’t ever flash your wealth to others.

When you are poor, spend money so that people can see it. When you are rich, don’t show off, but silently spend the money on yourself. When you are poor, you must be generous. When you are rich, you must not be seen as a spendthrift. Your life would have come full circle and reached its basics. There is tranquility at this stage.

12. Discipline yourself and stay focused.

There is nothing wrong with being young. You don’t need to be afraid of being poor. You need to know how to invest in yourself and increase your wisdom and stature. You need to know what is important in life and what is worth investing in. You also need to know what you should avoid spending your money on. This is the essence of discipline. Try to avoid spending money on clothes but buy a selective number of items that have class. Try to eat out less. If you do go out to eat, make sure it’s for lunch or dinner and always foot the bill. When buying people dinner, make sure you buy dinner for people who have bigger dreams than you and who work harder than you.

13. Make it a Habit.

No matter how much you earn, remember to split your salary into five parts. Take care of your body so that it will still be in good shape. Invest in your social circle so that you will constantly meet new people where you can learn new knowledge from. Expanding your network will also have an important impact in how much you earn eventually. Travel every year and expand your horizons. Also keep abreast with the latest developments in the industry. If you follow this plan diligently, you will soon see big surplus in your funds.

14. Always Smile.

Being able to smile when being slightly misunderstood is good upbringing. When you’re wronged and you smile with calmness, it is generosity. When you’re being taken advantage of and you can smile, you’re being open-minded. When you are helpless and you can do a philosophical smile, you’re in a calm state. When you’re in distress and you can laugh out loud, you’re being generous. When you’re looked down and you can calmly smile, you’re being confident. When you’re being jilted in relationships and you can smile it off, you’re being suave.
Whatever happened in the past is over. Do not dwell on past mistakes. There’s no point crying over spilt milk. Everybody makes mistakes. It’s what you learn from the mistakes, and promising yourself not to repeat those mistakes that matters. When you miss opportunities, don’t dwell on it, as there are always new opportunities on the horizon. There are many people who are struggling to make ends meet. It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor. There are lessons for all to learn from Li Ka Shing.
Apply Ka-Shing’s wisdom and you will buy a house and car in no time!

here’s A Place In The Philippines Where Mermaids Are Real. No, Seriously.

Fans of The Little Mermaid won’t have to look for Ursula to help them transform into their favorite sea sirens. At the Philippine Mermaid Swimming Academy, you can finally learn why it’s hotter under the water.
With locations in Metro Manila, Cebu City and Boracay Island, adults and children alike can take a dip in a rented tail and learn all the basics of mermaid swimming, or “mermaiding” as they call it.
Their website explains, “PMSA is the first in the Philippines and in the world to introduce a ‘school’ concept for mermaid swimming.”
mermaid-01
They aim to make “mermaiding” accessible to everyone regardless of age or gender.
mermaid-02
Classed start at around $40 for 2 hour sessions.
mermaid-03
Programs are structured in safe and fun environments.
mermaid-04
Little mergirls and merboys are always under careful supervision.
mermaid-05
The website claims kids take to it like, well, a fish to water!
mermaid-06
The academy was founded in 2012 by Anamie Saenz and Normeth Preglo, both hoping to start a new fitness craze. It took off right away!
Image: Mermaid Swimming Academy
The concept of mermaid swimming is quite simple: swimmers wear mermaid tails and learn how to use their core muscles to propel themselves forward gracefully (like a mermaid).
mermaid-09
Classes aren’t held in an actual school environment either. Soon-to-be mermaids are trained along Boracay Island’s White Beach and in rivers and lakes.
mermaid-10
So what will you actually learn? Everything from how to swim without floaters in the ocean, to how to wear and care for your mermaid tail.
mermaid-11
There are also classes for mermaid scuba diving and mermaid water scootering.

And if you think this school is just for kids with Disney obsessions, you’re wrong!
mermaid-14
mermaid-15
People of all ages (and genders) come to the academy to learn the art of mermaid swimming.
mermaid-18
A 2-hour introductory course will only set you back $40—which includes the use of a mermaid tail and a photo of your experience.

Money well spent, if you ask me!

As you progress through the lessons, you can graduate to “modern mermaiding,” and interact with some fishy friends!

Isn’t that neat? I want to be part of that world! If your biggest fantasy is to swim like a mermaid, you should definitely check this place out online and book your trip to the Philippines right away!
